New Training Opportunities Announced

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has announced new opportunities for 2018 in three different Contractor Training Programs.  The total of fifteen new openings are designed for trainees from developing States and include opportunities for scholarships, seminar support, internships and at-sea training.

The new opportunities are supported through the training programs of

  • Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (GSR)
  • IFREMER
  • Republic of Korea
  • Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM)
  • China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA)

Details on the opportunities follow:

Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (GSR), is offering five places for candidates from developing States under its 2018 contractor training programme.

The five training opportunities are for:

  1. One fellowship to attend the 2-year Master of Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management (Oceans & Lakes) programme organized by the Faculty of Science of the Free University of Brussels, Antwerp University and Ghent University with GSR providing travel, accommodation and tuition costs;
  1. Two places to attend the annual 2018 session of the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy in Greece (1-21 July 2018); and
  2. Two places to participate in  a seminar on Dredging Technologies organized by the Antwerp Port Training Center (APEC) in Antwerp, Belgium (18‐29 June 2018).

Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) is offering two (2) internships in Environmental Studies for 2018 during the following timeframes:

  1. Mid-May to Mid-July 2018
  2. May to June 2018

Candidates should be from developing states in accordance with Ifremer’s exploration contracts for polymetallic nodules and for polymetallic sulphides with the ISA. The internships will take place within the deep-sea ecosystems studies laboratory of Ifremer, in Brest, for a duration of two months.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea (MOF) is offering four at-sea, on-board training places for candidates from developing states, in the field of environmental baseline survey. The four openings are dispersed among two separate research cruises:

  1. A cruise to be organized by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), planned between March and April 2018 for about 30 days with R/V Kilo Moana operated by the University of Hawai’i. The survey will be focused on geological and biological sampling and collection of environmental baseline data in the Korean Contract Area for polymetallic nodules. The opportunities are provided in accordance with the extension of the contract for the exploration for polymetallic nodules with the ISA.
  2. A cruise to be organized by KIOST planned between May and June 2018 for around 40 days with R/V Isabu. The survey will be focused on geological and biological sampling and collection of environmental baseline data in the Central Indian Ridge. The opportunities are provided in accordance with the contract for the exploration for polymetallic sulphides with the ISA.

The Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) is offering two opportunities in September 2018 for candidates from developing States as part of its training programme in accordance with its Contract for exploration for polymetallic nodules. Candidates will receive a comprehensive six weeks multidisciplinary training in the field of polymetallic nodules project management including exploration, value chain and economic factors, environmental research and metallurgical processing.

The China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA) in accordance with its Contract for exploration for cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts is offering two training positions to candidates from developing States to participate in an engineering programme in either Beijing or Changsha, China.

The training will be for a duration of one month and is scheduled to commence during the second half of 2018.
